Potluck Assignments. How to Avoid the Chip Bag Trap.

When I host potluck I send a gentle list: two salads, one main, one bread, dessert, drinks. Not bossy—curated. Guests relax when they know their green bean almondine will not compete with three other green things.

I always take the boring job nobody wants: ice, plates, the extra chairs from the garage. Leadership is sometimes logistical. I learned that closing deals and running parent conferences.

Label allergens on a card by the buffet. Offer a plate for someone who needs to go first. Thank people by name when you toast. Gratitude is the best sauce.

Potluck is community at its messiest and best. Treat it like a dinner party with cooperative billing.
